Conversation and writing

The core of Claude remains the chat interface, and writing quality is still the reason many people pick it over competitors. In my daily use, Claude is noticeably better at holding a consistent tone across a long document than at producing one-line zingers — it shines on reports, documentation, long emails, and editing passes where it has to respect your existing voice.

Two features change the writing experience the most. Extended Thinking lets Claude reason through a problem step by step before answering, which matters for anything with internal logic — arguments, outlines, contract review. Artifacts move any substantial output (a document, a table, working HTML) into a separate panel that Claude edits in place instead of re-pasting the whole thing into chat. Once you draft in Artifacts, going back feels clumsy.

Coding features: Artifacts, Claude Code, and agents

For quick scripts and single-file prototypes, the chat app plus Artifacts is enough — Claude writes the code, renders it live, and iterates on your feedback. The serious coding feature is Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. It runs as a CLI, a Mac/Windows desktop app, in the browser at claude.ai/code, and as VS Code and JetBrains extensions. It reads your repository, plans multi-file changes, runs tests, and iterates until things pass. Claude Code is included in Pro and Max within the same usage budget, and on Opus 4.8 and 4.7 a fast mode (/fast) runs Opus at higher output speed.

Projects, Memory, and Skills

These three features turn Claude from a stateless chatbot into something closer to a colleague who knows your work.

• Projects are persistent workspaces. You attach knowledge files (style guides, codebases, product docs) and custom instructions once, and every chat inside the project starts with that context loaded.
• Memory carries relevant facts and preferences across separate conversations, so you stop re-explaining your stack, your role, or your formatting rules. You can review and delete what it has stored.
• Skills are reusable instruction packages Claude loads on demand for a specific task type — a report format, a review checklist, a repeatable workflow.

After extensively running client work through Projects, this is the single Claude AI feature I would least want to give up: the quality jump from Claude knowing your context beats any prompt trick.

Research mode, web search, and connectors

Claude can search the web in ordinary chats, but Research mode is the heavyweight version: it runs multi-step research across many sources and returns a structured, cited report. For competitive analysis or literature-style overviews it routinely saves me an afternoon, though I still spot-check the citations.

Connectors plug Claude into external tools — Google Drive, calendars, and anything exposing an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server — so it can read and act on your real data. On top of that sit Claude for Excel and PowerPoint (beta), the Claude for Chrome extension that works alongside you in the browser, and Claude Cowork, a research-preview agentic workspace bundled with Pro. Vision and file analysis — what Claude reads (and what it won’t make)

Claude accepts images up to a 2576px long edge on current models and handles screenshots, charts, whiteboard photos, and scanned documents well. Upload a PDF, CSV, or codebase and it will read, summarize, and answer questions against the actual content. With current Opus, Sonnet, and Fable models offering a 1M-token context window (Haiku 4.5 stays at 200K), whole books and large repositories fit in a single conversation.

What people get wrong about Claude’s features

• Expecting image generation. Claude analyzes images; it cannot create them. Pair it with a dedicated image tool if you need both.
• Assuming Pro includes API access. The $20 subscription covers the apps and Claude Code. API usage is billed separately per token.
• Ignoring Projects. Most quality complaints I hear come from people re-pasting context into fresh chats instead of setting up a Project once.
• Leaving Extended Thinking off for hard problems — or on for trivial ones, which just slows responses down.
• Subscribing through the mobile app, where platform fees can make the same plan cost more than on the web.
